THE LASER AND THE DOME

Now that London is no longer a major world port new uses have been found for the River Thames and its surrounds. At a major bend in the river at Greenwich a derelict former docks area was redeveloped in 2000, (at a cost of one billion pounds) with a modern domed arena to celebrate the Millennium. Initially unsuccessful, it soon became a highly sought after location for concerts and other large events. Extensively illuminated at night it is a major attraction for river cruisers. A green Laser beam can also be seen crossing the river at this point indicating the track of the Meridian. This beam originates from the Greenwich Observatory and given the right atmospheric conditions can be seen almost forty miles away to the north of London.
